Curriculum

Our Wider Curriculum: Living Our Faith
At St Bons, our Catholic faith is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that learning and faith go hand-hand, enriching each other and helping our children to grow into well-rounded individuals who live out the Gospel values. Our wider curriculum, encompassing History, Geography, and Science, is intentionally designed to connect with our core Gospel values, providing a deeper understanding and encouraging our children to live their faith in practical ways.

We organise our school year around three key Gospel values, exploring each one in depth over two terms:

Terms 1 & 2: Love Thy Neighbour
During these terms, we focus on the importance of loving and respecting everyone, just as Jesus taught us. Our learning in History, Geography, and Science will explore themes of community, compassion, and understanding different cultures and perspectives. Our Power of Reading texts will also reflect this theme, exploring stories of kindness, friendship, and empathy.

Terms 3 & 4: Seek the Truth
In these terms, we encourage our children to seek truth and justice in the world. Our curriculum will explore themes of fairness, honesty, and critical thinking. In History, we might investigate events where truth and justice were challenged, while in Science, we might explore the importance of accurate observation and investigation. Geography might involve studying global issues and how we can work towards a more just world. Our chosen Power of Reading texts will complement this theme, exploring stories of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of truth.

Terms 5 & 6: Care for Our Common Home
These terms focus on our responsibility to care for God's creation. Our learning in History, Geography, and Science will explore themes of sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the interconnectedness of all living things. We might explore different ecosystems in Geography. Science lessons might involve studying the impact of human activity on the environment. Our Power of Reading texts will reinforce this value, exploring stories about nature, conservation, and our role in protecting the planet.

Walking the Walk
To celebrate and reflect on our learning, we hold a "Walk the Walk" assembly at the end of each Gospel value theme. These assemblies provide an opportunity for children to share what they have learned and how it connects to the chosen Gospel value. It’s a chance to showcase their understanding and inspire others to live out their faith.

By weaving these Gospel values into our wider curriculum, we aim to nurture not only knowledgeable and skilled learners but also compassionate, responsible, and faith-filled individuals who are ready to make a positive impact on the world. We believe this approach helps children develop a deeper understanding of their faith and empowers them to live it out in their daily lives.
